A random quote

...to amuse at least one regular reader:

'Of the trenchermen who ate and drank at Luckows, the Baron Ferdinand Sinzig, of the house of Steinway, established a record which still stands by downing thirty-six seidels of Wurzburger - without rising. Envious competitors observed that he was a native of Cologne and therefore presumably without kidneys.'

Luchows German Cookery by Jan Mitchell (1955)

Very funny. But honestly...if the poor chap managed to down that many seidels, it was because he was exceedingly happy to get his hands on something other than thimbles of Kölsch. As in: deprivation leads to overindulgence. I will try the no-kidney line on my dad who's a (now retired) master brewer in the Frankfurt-Cologne area, see if he's seen any evidence of it :)

Master brewer! Wow - that's something to be proud of (ie never mind getting published in the Journal of Social Science and Medicine - brewing is a real job!). But please - name the brewery - and send samples !

Ha, that's exactly what my dad would say! :)

You won't have heard of the brewery - it's a small independent one named after its founder, Brauerei Helbig, in Weilburg, Hessen. Founded in 1822, steered by the dad through the tempest of the brewery consolidation years in the 1980s and remaining intact and independent until his retirement some 15 years ago. Then the new master brewer changed the recipe, there was an uproar (riots!, my dad will tell you) and they brought the dad back in to fix the recipe (he LOVES that story. But ultimately from what I remember the new folks sold out to some big brewery, I forget which. They kept the name but the small, local family business is no more. Not sure if the beer is still any good (well, Ritesh for one still likes it) but if we ever make it up to your latitudes, we'll make sure to bring you some :)
